ThinBlueNews news-card graphic for a story about Philadelphia Police Sgt. Thomas Cain saving a choking toddler at FDR Park; not a still from the incident video.

PHILADELPHIA — Newly released body-camera footage shows Philadelphia Police Sgt. Thomas Cain racing into a crowd at FDR Park and working to save a toddler who was choking on a chip, according to reports from WPVI-TV and ABC News. The emergency happened at the Anna Verna Playground in South Philadelphia in March. WPVI reported that Cain responded after a child was struggling to breathe and that someone handed him the toddler as he reached the crowd. Cain began repeated back slaps, then turned the child over and continued trying to clear her airway. In WPVI’s account, Cain said the girl’s condition worsened as her eyes rolled back, her tongue began to swell, and she showed no signs of breathing. “Come on, baby. Come on,” Cain can be heard saying in the body-camera footage, according to WPVI. ABC News identified the child as Emma and reported that her family said she began choking on a chip while at the playground. The family, who declined to appear on camera, credited Cain with saving her life and said she is now doing fine, ABC News reported. Cain told WPVI he was trying to determine who the child’s mother was while also focusing on CPR and airway-clearing efforts. He estimated … [Read more...] about Bodycam Shows Philadelphia Sergeant Saving Choking Toddler at FDR Park

Frame from body-camera video released by the Beeville Police Department and shown in KSAT coverage, with ThinBlueNews headline overlay. Responders are seen at a flooded creek crossing during the baby rescue.

BEEVILLE, Texas — Body-camera video from South Texas captured the kind of fast-moving rescue that reminds every driver why flooded roads are so dangerous. The Beeville Police Department said officers and firefighters responded Saturday after a vehicle entered a flooded creek crossing during heavy rain and began being pushed by rushing water. A baby was inside the vehicle. According to KSAT, which reported on the Beeville Police Department’s post, a fire chief attempted to wave the driver down as the vehicle approached the crossing, but the driver did not see him in time. Police said the rain moved in quickly and barricades had not yet been placed at the crossing. The video shows first responders moving into the water and reaching the passenger side of the vehicle. The Guardian reported that a man inside the vehicle asked responders to get his child, and a responder reached through the passenger-side window to take the infant carrier. Moments later, the baby was carried away from the vehicle and brought to safety. Another responder quickly covered the carrier with a high-visibility jacket after the baby was moved to the roadside. Police said no injuries were reported. A rescue … [Read more...] about Bodycam Shows Beeville Officers Rescue Baby From Flooded Creek Crossing

NYPD bodycam frame with title overlay for ThinBlueNews article about officers rescuing a woman from a Brooklyn high-rise ledge.

In the middle of a frightening call 30 stories above downtown Brooklyn, New York City police officers showed the kind of steady compassion that rarely makes the biggest headlines but can change a life in a matter of minutes. According to Police1 reporting based on body-worn camera footage released by the NYPD, officers responded to the Avalon Willoughby Square high-rise on Duffield Street near Willoughby Street after a 41-year-old woman climbed over a plexiglass barrier and sat on the edge of the building roughly 30 stories above the sidewalk. Watch the body-camera footage The scene was dangerous from the first moments. The woman was crying, the wind could be heard on the body-camera audio, and responding officers had to keep her talking while they waited for specialized help. Rather than rush her or treat the call like a problem to be solved by force, the officers did what good cops do every day: they slowed the moment down, reached for her hand, and reminded her she was not alone. “Please don’t do it, we care about you,” one officer can be heard saying in the footage, according to Police1. “We don’t want you to hurt yourself.” Members of the NYPD Emergency … [Read more...] about NYPD Officers Talk Woman Safely Back From Brooklyn High-Rise Ledge
