JACKSON COUNTY, Alabama — A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy has been recognized with a Life Saving Award after officials said her quick response helped control severe bleeding during a critical emergency.

According to WZDX reporting republished by Yahoo News, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Brenda Fossett responded to a serious injury call involving a woman who was trapped between a tree and a lawn mower.

Officials said Fossett assessed the situation and used her tourniquet to help control the bleeding while medical personnel were still on the way, the report said.

“Without hesitation, she assessed the situation and utilized her tourniquet to help control the bleeding while awaiting the arrival of medical personnel,” the sheriff’s office said, according to the report. “Her quick thinking, calm demeanor, and selfless actions played a vital role in providing life-saving care until the victim could be airlifted for further treatment.”

Recognition for calm under pressure

The sheriff’s office said Fossett’s actions made a critical difference in the outcome and praised her immediate response during the life-threatening call.

“Brenda’s professionalism, courage, and commitment to serving others went above and beyond the call of duty. We are grateful for her dedication and proud to have her as part of our team,” the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said, according to the report.

For Support Law Enforcement readers, the Jackson County case is another reminder that deputies often carry medical responsibility into unpredictable scenes — and that training, equipment and calm decisions can matter before an ambulance reaches the patient.
