BLACKBUTT NORTH, Queensland — A Queensland police constable rescued a 91-year-old man’s dog from a burning home in the South Burnett, according to ABC News reporting that cited Queensland Police Service-supplied footage.
ABC identified the officer as Constable Kieren Trannore and the dog as Candice, a Chihuahua described by the officer as a little “snarky” during the rescue.
Body-worn footage showed the rescue
The report said Constable Trannore climbed over a railing onto the verandah of the Blackbutt North home while the building was still alight and retrieved Candice. Body-worn camera footage showed the officer getting the dog away from the fire, ABC reported.
“I couldn’t do anything to win it over, so eventually just grabbed the jumper and picked it up and put it over the railing and into the owner’s arms, which was nice,” Constable Trannore told ABC.
The officer said the 91-year-old owner was grateful to still have his “best mate,” according to ABC.
“Obviously it’s upsetting — an elderly male, he’s lost his home, everything he had, but on the plus side there was no-one hurt,” Constable Trannore said, according to the report.
Queensland Police commended the action
ABC reported that Queensland Police commended Constable Trannore for his actions. The report said no serious injuries were reported and that authorities said the June 2 fire was not being treated as suspicious.
Constable Trannore described the rescue as part of community-style policing, telling ABC that moments like this bring a rewarding feeling when officers are able to help people.
