SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Newly released police body-camera footage shows officers and racetrack security personnel moving toward frightened horses as fire consumed a barn at the Saratoga Casino Hotel harness track, helping get 10 horses out of an adjacent barn.

Officers and security personnel moved horses from danger
The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. on June 16 in the backstretch barn area at Saratoga Casino Hotel. Saratoga Springs Police said officers arrived to find one barn fully involved and worked with New York Racing Association security personnel as flames moved closer to a neighboring barn.
According to the department's account and video, 10 horses in the adjacent barn stood in their stalls “frozen in fear.” Officers and security personnel entered the area and helped lead those animals out.
The department said experience within its Mounted Unit became an important, unplanned advantage. Officers familiar with horse behavior, equipment and communication were working that morning and used that knowledge during the evacuation.
The fire caused a devastating loss
The rescue unfolded alongside a tragedy. Seventeen horses died in the burning barn. WRGB's July 24 report said an 18th horse escaped with minor injuries and approximately 350 horses in nearby barns were moved to safety.
