LA MARQUE, Texas — La Marque officials honored a police sergeant and four fire-rescue personnel after the city said their response to a fiery vehicle crash saved a trapped victim’s life.
The City of La Marque said Fire Chief David Meryman and Police Chief Byron Frankland recognized the responders during the June 22, 2026 City Council meeting.
According to the city, the Life Saving Award recognized actions taken after a severe two-vehicle crash on May 17, 2026.
Sergeant entered burning vehicle with civilian helper
The city said Sergeant Conan King of the La Marque Police Department was first on scene and found a vehicle actively on fire with a person trapped inside.
Without hesitation, King entered the burning vehicle alongside a civilian and helped rescue the trapped victim moments before the car became fully engulfed in flames, according to the city’s release.
Firefighters and medics continued life-saving care
La Marque Fire Department personnel then worked to suppress the fire, secure the scene and provide advanced emergency medical care, the city reported.
Officials said firefighters and paramedics delivered critical treatment on scene and during transport to UTMB Galveston, stabilizing severe injuries and burns.
Because of the coordinated response, the city said, the victim survived and was discharged home on May 29, 2026 after 12 days of hospitalization.
