LYNN, Indiana — Lynn Town Marshal Brad Fisher died Wednesday after being struck by a fleeing vehicle while preparing to deploy tire-deflation devices during a police pursuit, according to Indiana State Police.

Fisher was positioned ahead of the pursuit near the intersection of U.S. 27 and U.S. 36 in Lynn when the vehicle veered toward him, Indiana State Police Sgt. Scott Keegan said in a briefing reported by WISH-TV. Fisher attempted to move into a ditch but was struck. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The pursuit began after a Randolph County sheriff’s deputy recognized a stolen van and attempted a traffic stop, according to the state police account. The driver did not stop and led officers across the county. After striking Fisher, the van continued before crashing into a dump truck.

The driver was also taken to a hospital and was in custody after being released, WISH-TV reported. Any criminal allegations remain accusations unless and until proven in court.

More Than 25 Years of Service

Fisher had served as Lynn’s town marshal for more than 25 years. Lynn is a small Randolph County community near the Indiana-Ohio line.

Keegan described the loss as a shock to a close-knit community and said it would affect both residents and the first responders who worked alongside Fisher.

The Town of Lynn and surrounding public-safety agencies are now mourning a longtime officer whose final actions were part of an effort to stop a dangerous pursuit before more people could be harmed.
