BRADENTON, Florida — Three Bradenton police officers, a sheriff’s aviation crew and a civilian boater worked together to locate and rescue a man who was calling for help from the Manatee River after dark, according to the police department and a newly published news report.
Bradenton Police said officers responded shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, after receiving reports that a man in the river near Riverside Drive East was yelling for help. The darkness made it difficult for officers on shore to determine exactly where he was.
A nearby boater agreed to help
The department identified the responding officers as Sgt. Perez, Officer M. Wall and Officer Bautista. When they saw a nearby civilian boater, they asked whether he could help carry the search onto the water. He agreed.
The officers boarded the civilian’s vessel while the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit searched from above. With the aviation crew helping narrow the search area, the officers and boater reached the man and brought him aboard.

Bradenton Police publicly thanked the boater, saying his willingness to assist played an important role in bringing the rescue to a safe conclusion.
The response required three different perspectives to work as one: officers could hear the person from shore, an aviation crew could search a wider area from above, and the boater supplied the immediate way onto the river. No one part of that chain was treated as incidental.
The rescue also illustrates why community cooperation can matter in the first minutes of an emergency. The civilian was not asked to take over police work; he provided a practical capability that responders needed, while sworn officers and the sheriff’s aviation unit directed the search and completed the recovery.
