Chatham County Officers Honored After Children Rescued From Apartment Fire Balcony

May 28, 2026 By Joy Leave a Comment

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Two Chatham County police officers were honored after a frightening apartment-fire rescue where children were dropped from a balcony to safety below, according to WJCL reporting.

WJCL identified the officers as Chatham County Police Officer Brandon Lowe and Officer Tom Velte. The station reported that county leaders recognized the officers during a Chatham County Commission meeting after the Georgetown Oaks apartment fire.

The details are the kind that stop people in their tracks: smoke, panic, children trapped above ground level, and officers positioned below as family members made the desperate decision to get the children off the balcony and into waiting arms.

According to WJCL, the children were dropped from a balcony during the fire and helped to safety by the officers below. The station also reported that the children were grandchildren of Savannah Alderman Detric Leggett.

Recognized for being there when seconds mattered

The recognition matters because it highlights a part of police work the public does not always see. Officers are often called into situations that are not neatly categorized as one kind of emergency. A fire scene can quickly become a rescue scene, a crowd-control scene, a medical scene and a family crisis all at once.

In moments like that, first responders may not have time for perfect conditions. They have to move toward the danger, communicate quickly and be ready for whatever happens next.

For Officers Lowe and Velte, WJCL’s report says that meant helping children get down from a balcony during an active apartment fire and then later being publicly honored by county leaders.

A reminder of the full public-safety team

Apartment fires can turn chaotic fast, especially when families are trapped on upper floors. Police, firefighters, dispatchers, EMS crews and neighbors all play roles in getting people out, keeping roads clear, directing families and making sure victims are checked once they reach safety.

This story is also a reminder that law enforcement support is not only about the dramatic headline. It is about recognizing the ordinary readiness behind it — the training, the willingness to stand in the danger zone and the calm it takes to help a frightened family through the worst seconds of their day.

ThinBlueNews will continue following official updates and verified recognition involving officers, deputies, firefighters, dispatchers, EMS crews and other public-safety workers who step into dangerous scenes to protect families.
