Chatham County Officers Honored After Children Rescued From Apartment Fire Balcony

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Two Chatham County police officers were honored after a frightening apartment-fire rescue where children were dropped from a balcony to safety below, according to WJCL reporting. WJCL identified the officers as Chatham County Police Officer Brandon Lowe and Officer Tom Velte. The station reported that county leaders recognized the officers during a Chatham County Commission meeting after the Georgetown Oaks apartment fire. The details are the kind that stop people in their tracks: smoke, panic, children trapped above ground level, and officers positioned below as family members made the desperate decision to get the children off the balcony and into waiting arms. According to WJCL, the children were dropped from a balcony during the fire and helped to safety by the officers below.
