LAKE VILLA, Ill. — Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit deputies rescued three swimmers who were struggling to stay afloat Saturday afternoon on Petite Lake, according to a July 19 sheriff’s office release.
The sheriff’s office said deputies were patrolling the lake in unincorporated Lake Villa at about 2:50 p.m. on July 18 when the operator of a rental boat flagged them down. The operator told deputies that three friends from the boat were missing in the water.
Deputies find the swimmers about 100 yards from the boat
Deputies began searching and found the three swimmers about 100 yards away, showing signs of distress and struggling to remain above the surface, according to the agency account reported by the Lake and McHenry County Scanner and the Daily Herald.
The Marine Unit deputies maneuvered their personal watercraft to the swimmers and directed them to grab rescue bars. All three were brought back safely to the rental boat.
The sheriff’s office did not publicly identify the swimmers. ThinBlueNews is preserving that privacy and is not adding medical claims beyond the public account.
Marine Unit readiness made the difference
The personal watercraft were provided through Sea-Doo’s public-safety loan program by Nielsen Enterprises, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli told the local news outlet. The rescue shows how a patrol already on the water can rapidly turn into a lifesaving response.
“Because our Marine Unit was on the water and ready to respond, and thanks to our valued partnership with Nielsen Enterprises, which provides the personal watercraft our deputies use, they were rescued before tragedy struck.”

Sheriff Idleburg said the three young adults had been drinking and were not wearing life jackets. The sheriff’s office said the rental-boat operator was not operating under the influence, while alcohol was a factor for the swimmers.
