FOREST VIEW, Ill. — A Forest View police officer has received a Life-Saving Award for forcing open the door of a burning vehicle and pulling an injured driver to safety moments before flames overtook the car.
Officer Jonathan Rodriguez was recognized during the Village of Forest View Board of Trustees meeting on June 23, according to Southwest Regional Publishing’s July 16 report. The village’s official meeting archive confirms the date and public agenda for that board session.
Officer finds driver trapped inside burning vehicle
Police Chief Jim Ritz said Rodriguez responded to a motor-vehicle crash near Harlem and Ogden avenues at approximately 2:38 a.m. on May 9. When he arrived, Rodriguez found an occupant trapped inside a vehicle that was already engulfed in flames, the local report said.
Ritz told the board that Rodriguez recognized the immediate danger and physically forced open the driver’s-side door. The officer then removed the driver moments before the vehicle became fully engulfed.
The driver survived with a broken leg and arm, according to the published account. ThinBlueNews is not identifying the driver or adding a cause for the crash or fire because those details were not included in the public materials reviewed for this report.
Life-Saving Award recognizes bravery and quick action
The award citation recognized Rodriguez for his quick thinking, bravery and dedication to duty. Photographs from the ceremony show Ritz presenting the award and shaking hands with Rodriguez as fellow officers and community members attended the meeting.
The rescue required a rapid decision under dangerous conditions. Instead of waiting at a distance from a growing vehicle fire, Rodriguez moved to the driver’s side, created an exit and brought the injured occupant away from the car before the flames spread further.
Forest View is a village southwest of Chicago. Its official police-department page identifies the agency as providing local law-enforcement and emergency-response services to the community.
Recognition presented during public board meeting
Rodriguez was one of two Forest View officers recognized at the June 23 meeting. Officer Antonio Whitfield received a separate department commendation for an unrelated stolen-vehicle arrest. This report focuses on Rodriguez’s lifesaving rescue and does not merge the two incidents.
The public award gives the community a documented look at work that began during an overnight emergency and ended weeks later with formal recognition. The ceremony image depicts the actual presentation, not the vehicle fire or rescue.
