CAMERON COUNTY, Texas — Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Alfonso Salinas has been recognized with the agency’s Life Saving Commendation after pulling a woman to safety during an expressway crisis, according to KRGV.
Sheriff Manuel Treviño presented the commendation Wednesday, June 10, 2026, for Salinas’ actions on May 27, the station reported.
According to the report, Salinas was driving on the expressway when he saw a vehicle slow down and stop. A woman exited the vehicle and moved toward a ledge. Salinas reached her as she had one foot over the ledge, grabbed her and pulled her back to safety.
KRGV reported that Salinas stayed with the woman until emergency medical services arrived. ThinBlueNews is limiting private details about the person in crisis and focusing on the public recognition of the deputy’s response.
“It’s something that law enforcement officers do almost on a daily basis,” Salinas told KRGV. “Usually what you see on the news is the bad stuff, so it’s good to get recognized for the good stuff that we do.”
Sheriff’s Office Praised Quick Action
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office credited Salinas’ quick thinking, professionalism and compassion, saying his actions helped protect the individual from harm during a life-threatening incident, according to the KRGV report.
The recognition is the kind of public-safety story communities often never see: a patrol decision made in seconds, a crisis met with restraint and urgency, and a deputy staying with someone until medical help arrived.
