Three Sidney, Ohio police officers are being recognized after a late-night search helped save an elderly resident who had gone missing in freezing conditions.
According to the City of Sidney Police Department announcement, officers were dispatched to The Landings at about 12:23 a.m. on March 24, 2026, after care workers reported that an 87-year-old woman with dementia had not been seen for approximately 30 minutes.
Officers and staff searched nearby neighborhoods and fields. After roughly 30 minutes, Officer Jared Magoteaux found the woman in a ditch near Abbot Circle, according to the department.
Police said the woman had fallen into the ditch and could not stand on her own. She was wearing only pajamas and no shoes while temperatures were around 24 degrees, and her feet were beginning to show signs of cold exposure when she was found.
Officer Trevor Robbins and Officer Tanner Robbins arrived and assisted Sidney Department of Fire and Emergency Services personnel with safely extricating the woman and making sure she received medical attention, the department said.
In recognition of the response, Officer Magoteaux received the department’s Life-Saving Award. Officers Trevor Robbins and Tanner Robbins each received the Department Police Commendation Award.
The department said the officers’ actions showed “exceptional dedication, compassion, and teamwork” and reflected credit on both the officers and the Sidney Police Department.
It is the kind of public-safety work that often happens quietly: a midnight call, a search in the cold, and officers staying with the problem until a vulnerable neighbor is found.
