SURF CITY, N.J. — An Ocean County Sheriff's Office drone dropped a self-inflating flotation device to a swimmer caught in a rip current off Long Beach Island, giving her something to hold until rescuers could reach her and bring her safely ashore.

Three swimmers were caught in the current
News 12 reported that the emergency call involved three swimmers in distress Friday evening, July 17: two younger swimmers and a middle-aged man. ThinBlueNews is not publishing names or additional identifying details.
Two good Samaritans and Surf City lifeguards had reached the water by the time emergency crews arrived and helped secure two of the swimmers. A third swimmer remained farther offshore without assistance, according to the local report.
An Ocean County sheriff's drone team happened to be positioned about one block away when the alert was broadcast. The operator launched a drone carrying a Restube, a compact self-inflating flotation device, and released it within the swimmer's reach.
The flotation device bridged the gap
The aerial footage shows the swimmer reaching the yellow flotation device while another person moves nearby in the water. News 12 reported that she held onto the inflated buoy until rescue workers reached her with a surfboard and brought her safely to shore. The other two swimmers were also brought out of the water.
The response combined technology with the work of lifeguards, first responders and bystanders already moving toward people in danger. The drone did not replace water rescuers; it quickly delivered buoyancy during the interval before they could make physical contact.
A public-safety tool positioned for beach emergencies
News 12 said the sheriff's office routinely positions drone operators on the north and south barrier islands during peak evening hours to support local water-rescue teams, including during dangerous rip currents and emergencies outside normal beach-coverage periods.
