ORANGE, New Hampshire — Conservation officers, local fire personnel and wilderness-response team members carried an injured hiker approximately 1.9 miles off Mount Cardigan on October 25, 2026, according to the NH Fish and Game Department.
This recent feature covers the Sunday rescue described in the department’s October 26, 2026 release; it is not a new emergency alert.
A response near the summit
The department said it received the call at approximately 2:45 p.m. after a hiker fell while descending the Holt Trail in Orange. The release described the injury as non-life-threatening but said it required a carry-out.
Conservation Officers responded alongside fire personnel from Canaan, Enfield, Rumney, Bristol and Alexandria, plus ten members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, according to the department.
The carry to the trailhead
Responders reached the hiker approximately 0.2 miles below the summit. The department’s account distinguishes that location from the approximately 1.9-mile carry to the trailhead.
The team reached the trailhead at 8 p.m., the department said. A Bristol Fire Department ambulance then transported the hiker to Speare Memorial Hospital. The release does not provide a later recovery or discharge update.
