MOORE, Okla. — A Moore police officer helped a mother and her 11-month-old child out through the rear window of an SUV after seeing it roll over at an intersection, according to police and two Oklahoma City news reports.

KOKH FOX 25 reported July 17 that Officer Nichols was stopped at a red light when he saw the SUV make an illegal left turn and continue through another red light. Seconds later, the vehicle rolled over.

Nichols immediately ran to the overturned vehicle and learned that a mother and infant were inside, according to KOKH and KFOR's July 17 report.

The bodycam footage records Nichols speaking calmly at the vehicle and arranging help outside. The officer guided the child and mother through the rear window while firefighters and paramedics responded.

Police said neither occupant was injured. ThinBlueNews is not identifying the mother or child and is not publishing a close image of the infant.

Driver arrested after alleged impaired driving

Investigators alleged that the mother was impaired and registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.14, KOKH reported. The outlet said she was arrested on several complaints. ThinBlueNews is treating those allegations as unproven unless resolved in court and is not adding a name or charges that were not specified in the public reports reviewed.

“Every time someone chooses to drive impaired, they're gambling with the lives of everyone around them. Thankfully, this story didn't end in tragedy,” the Moore Police Department said in a statement quoted by KOKH.

The department also said its officers responded to more than 60 DUI-related incidents between May 1 and July 1. The rollover response shows how quickly a traffic violation can become a rescue call involving police, fire and emergency medical personnel.
