OXFORD, Mississippi — The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi selected DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle as its 2026 Hometown Hero, citing his public service, law-enforcement career and work with young people in his community.
According to the June 9 U.S. Attorney’s Office release, U.S. Attorney Scott Leary presented the award to Tuggle as part of Freedom 250, a nationwide U.S. Attorney’s Office effort tied to the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding.
The release said the Hometown Hero Award honors “liberty, service, and civic responsibility” by recognizing people who make significant contributions to preserve or improve their communities.
Service beyond the badge
Leary said the federal office is continually working with state and local law-enforcement partners to make Mississippi safer, and called Tuggle a professional lawman who “continually shows up for the children of his community.”
“Not only is Sheriff Tuggle a gifted professional law man, but he also continually shows up for the children of his community,” Leary said, according to the release. “He works tirelessly at his job, especially for the kids.”
The release said Tuggle has served as a Marine, a policeman, a highway patrol officer and training consultant over the course of his career.
Youth mentorship in DeSoto County
As sheriff, Tuggle has led the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Youth Mentor Program, which the release described as a year-long program focused on character, mindset, skills, confidence and self-worth.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the program recognizes young people in front of their community at the end of the year. The release also said Tuggle told attendees that he shares the award with his entire team.
“To receive this award is not only an honor but I share it with the entire team,” Tuggle said, according to the release.
For ThinBlueNews readers, the story is a reminder that law-enforcement recognition is not limited to one dramatic rescue or one headline moment. Sometimes the public-safety work with the longest reach is the steady effort to keep young people connected to accountability, confidence and community support before a crisis happens.
