NEW BERN, North Carolina — Three Craven County Sheriff’s Office deputies used calm conversation and coordinated teamwork to bring a man safely down from the railing of the Neuse River Bridge, according to the agency account carried by two local newsrooms.
WCTI reported that deputies responded at about 8:15 p.m. Monday, July 20, after receiving a report of a possible stranded motorist on the bridge. WNCT also published the sheriff’s office account on July 22.
Deputies found an empty vehicle and began searching
When deputies arrived, they found an unoccupied vehicle and searched the area for its driver. They then located a man sitting on the bridge railing facing the water, the reports said.
ThinBlueNews is not identifying the man or publishing additional details about the personal crisis described to responders. The public-safety significance is the deputies’ documented response and the safe outcome.
Corporal kept the man talking while two deputies approached
Corporal J. Erickson began speaking with the man, offering support and reassurance while keeping him engaged, according to the sheriff’s office account reported by WCTI.
While Erickson continued the conversation, Lieutenant C. Desmarais and Deputy M. Hepburn approached and safely secured the man, bringing him off the railing.
The coordinated response combined time, communication and a careful physical approach. Rather than turning a private crisis into a spectacle, the deputies focused on protecting life and getting the man to the next level of help.
Man was taken to a New Bern medical center for care
Deputies transported the man to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, where the reports said he was placed under an involuntary commitment order so he could receive care.
