A Cartersville police officer has been recognized for a fast, calm response that city officials say helped save a student’s life after a serious traffic incident near Cartersville High School.

According to the City of Cartersville announcement, Officer Dixie Tucker was recognized at the May 7 City Council meeting with the Cartersville Police Department’s Life Saving Award.

The city said the award stemmed from an October 2025 incident at Cartersville High School, after officials received notification that a student had been struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 41.

Officer Tucker responded immediately, according to the city. When she arrived and found the student suffering from severe injuries and heavy bleeding, she worked with Cartersville High School staff members to use a belt as a makeshift tourniquet.

When additional first responders arrived with medical equipment, Officer Tucker applied her department-issued tourniquet. Doctors later confirmed that her quick actions helped save the student’s life, the city reported.

The city said Officer Tucker was also recognized as the Bartow County Officer of the Year by the Cartersville Elks Lodge and later received the state-level award as well.

The recognition highlights a piece of police work that often happens before the full emergency response picture is visible: getting to the scene, controlling the bleeding, and keeping a young life in the fight until more help arrives.
