ThinBlueNews remembers Captain Christopher J. Garrow of the New York State Police on the anniversary of his End of Watch, Monday, June 12, 2023.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Captain Garrow died as the result of cancer that developed after his assignment to search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. ODMP lists his cause of death as a 9/11-related illness.
The New York State Police memorial page says Captain Garrow became a member of the State Police on October 30, 2000, was assigned to help with search and recovery work in New York City after 9/11, and last served at Troop B Zone Headquarters in Lewis, New York.
In a 2025 bridge-dedication announcement, the New York State Police described Captain Garrow as a Marine Corps veteran who began his State Police career in Plattsburgh, served in roles including marine operator, firearms instructor, Underwater Rescue Team member, field training officer, sergeant, station commander, zone sergeant, lieutenant and captain, and received a Superintendent’s Commendation award and a 911 First Responder award.
ODMP lists Captain Garrow’s survivors as his wife, two daughters, father, mother and brother. The State Police memorial page also notes that he resided in Peru, New York, and was survived by his wife and two daughters.
This anniversary remembrance is offered with respect for Captain Garrow’s family, his New York State Police colleagues, the fellow responders affected by long-term 9/11 illness, and the North Country community continuing to carry his name forward.
Captain Garrow’s End of Watch reminds us that the cost of a call to service can continue long after the scene clears, and that remembrance must include those whose sacrifice came years after the first response.
