A LaPorte County sheriff’s deputy is recovering after authorities say a roadside act of help turned into a violent hospital shooting in Michigan City, Indiana.
According to a May 26 Police1 report, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Samuelson picked up a man from a roadway on May 23 after believing he was a stranded motorist. The man reportedly asked Samuelson to take him to Franciscan Health Hospital – Michigan City Campus.
What began as a routine act of service took a dangerous turn after they arrived at the hospital. Police1 reported that Samuelson learned the man was a crime suspect and confronted him with the accusations. During the altercation that followed, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Samuelson three times.
The sheriff’s office said Samuelson was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for advanced medical treatment. According to the update cited by Police1, Samuelson underwent eight hours of surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition after surgery.
“Thank you to the surgeons and the entire medical staff at Memorial Hospital for the exceptional care being provided to Deputy Samuelson,” the sheriff’s office stated, according to Police1. “Please continue to pray for Jon, his family and friends, and the entire law enforcement community.”
Indiana State Police said the suspect has been charged with attempted murder, battery against a public safety official and auto theft, according to the Police1 report.
For many supporters of law enforcement, the story is a sobering reminder of how quickly an ordinary call for help can become a life-threatening encounter. Deputies, officers, troopers, dispatchers and corrections officers often step into uncertain situations before the full facts are known — and sometimes, as this case shows, even a moment that begins with compassion can carry serious danger.
ThinBlueNews is keeping Deputy Samuelson, his family, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office and the medical teams caring for him in our prayers.
