ThinBlueNews remembers Sergeant Scott Paul Lunger of the Hayward Police Department on the 11th anniversary of his End of Watch, Wednesday, July 22, 2015.

The Officer Down Memorial Page records that Sergeant Lunger died in the line of duty after he was shot during an early-morning traffic stop in Hayward, California. This anniversary remembrance leaves out graphic detail and focuses on his service, sacrifice and continuing legacy.

Fifteen years of service to Hayward

ODMP lists Lunger as 48 years old, badge 106, and a 15-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department. Its memorial record says he was survived by his two daughters. ThinBlueNews includes that public fact only to recognize the family that has carried the loss; this remembrance does not intrude further into private family details.

The memorial record says Lunger and another officer were approaching a vehicle after a traffic stop when gunfire came from inside it. The second officer returned fire, and the person responsible was later taken into custody. ODMP records that the case concluded with a sentence of 50 years to life in 2022. Those verified facts provide context, but the criminal case is not the center of this remembrance.

A City of Hayward news release dated July 23, 2015 corroborates Lunger's name, rank and Hayward Police Department service. The official notice described the police procession that escorted his body from Oakland to a Hayward funeral home, reflecting the department and community response immediately after his death.

Eleven years later, still remembered

This is an anniversary remembrance, offered with respect for Sergeant Lunger's daughters, family, friends, fellow officers, the Hayward Police Department and the California community he served.

Eleven years after his End of Watch, Scott Lunger is remembered for 15 years of service and for the enduring place his name holds among his family, department and community.
