SARASOTA, Fla. — Newly released police body-camera footage shows Sarasota officers running toward a burning motel and going door to door to get guests outside before firefighters took over.
Officers responded to the Cadillac Motel in the 4000 block of North Tamiami Trail just before 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, after a fire was reported, according to the Sarasota Police Department account distributed by WFLA and a separate FOX 13 report.
Flames were already spreading
Officers Brendan Cook and Krista Gagnon arrived as a room at the single-story, seven-unit motel was fully engulfed, FOX 13 reported. The footage shows officers knocking on doors, shouting warnings and checking units while flames and heavy smoke moved through part of the structure.
“There was no going into the room and there was no using a fire extinguisher,” Gagnon told WFLA in a follow-up interview. She said evacuation had to come first.
At one point, an officer repeatedly directed a man to leave a room rather than stop for shoes and belongings. The man then came through the smoke-filled doorway, according to the video. ThinBlueNews is not identifying him.
One person taken to the hospital
The Sarasota County Fire Department said preliminary information indicated the fire began in one unit and spread into the attic. One person was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.
Cook said the limited injury toll was “more than a blessing.” The State Fire Marshal continued to investigate how the fire started, according to FOX 13. No cause is asserted in this report.
A coordinated first response
Gagnon and Cook described the response as officers immediately falling into familiar roles. Police handled the urgent door-to-door evacuation while the fire department took over suppression and the building response.
The footage documents a routine patrol skill that becomes critical without warning: recognizing that a rapidly changing fire scene requires immediate evacuation, clear commands and a fast handoff to fire crews.
