MEMPHIS, Tenn. — This anniversary remembrance honors Memphis Police Officer II Sean Michael Bolton, whose end of watch was August 1, 2015.

Eleven years later, ThinBlueNews remembers his service, the citizen who summoned help over the officer's radio, and the family, colleagues and community who carried his memory forward.

A Marine veteran who served Memphis

The Officer Down Memorial Page records that Bolton was 33 and had served with the Memphis Police Department for more than four years. ODMP also identifies him as a United States Marine Corps veteran.

Contemporaneous NBC News coverage, citing Memphis police and city officials, likewise identified Bolton as 33 and reported that he had joined the department in October 2010.

End of watch: August 1, 2015

According to ODMP, Bolton encountered an illegally parked vehicle near Cottonwood and Perkins roads in Memphis on the evening of August 1, 2015. He was shot as he approached and later died at Regional Medical Center. A citizen used Bolton's police radio to call for assistance.

This remembrance intentionally does not dwell on graphic details. The essential record is that Officer Bolton died in the line of duty while serving Memphis, and that an ordinary member of the public stepped forward in the first moments after the attack to bring help.

NBC News reported at the time that Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong described the loss as a difficult moment for the department and city. Then-Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr. asked the public to pray for Bolton's family and for Memphis.

A name carried forward

Bolton's service remains part of Memphis Police Department history. In 2022, Local 24 reported that the department named a K-9 “Bolt” in honor of him—a continuing tribute seven years after his death.

ODMP lists Bolton's name on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at panel 38-East, line 29. A panel and line preserve a place in the national record; remembrance gives that record meaning. On this August 1 anniversary, we remember a Marine veteran, a Memphis police officer and a life of service that continues to be honored.
