LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Austin Abdelnabi died Aug. 4, 2026, after being shot while responding to reports of an armed person in the east Las Vegas valley, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations. He was 30.
8 News Now reported that Abdelnabi had served with Metro since November 2023. Sheriff Kevin McMahill described him as a U.S. Marine veteran during a hospital briefing after speaking with the officer’s family.

Police said dispatchers received reports shortly before 4 p.m. of an armed person near East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street. Officers and department drones responded. According to 8 News Now’s incident report, police said the armed person opened fire and at least one officer returned fire. Abdelnabi and the other person were struck.
Abdelnabi was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Service remembered
The Las Vegas Sun reported that Abdelnabi was among the first officers to respond. McMahill said medical personnel tried to save him and described a grieving family, police department and community.
Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft said county flags would be lowered in the fallen officer’s honor. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo also offered condolences, according to the Sun.
