An Elyria, Ohio patrol officer has been recognized by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for what federal officials described as a fast, dangerous response that helped save a mother and her four young children.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Patrol Officer Ali Sabeiha of the Elyria Police Department received the Freedom 250 Hometown Hero Award for the district.
The office said U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer presented the recognition to Officer Sabeiha for acts of heroism tied to a January 21, 2026 response in Elyria.
Federal officials reported that Officer Sabeiha was on duty responding to an armed robbery when a pursuit ended and the suspect fled on foot. According to the release, the armed suspect entered a home where a mother was arriving with four young children and took the mother hostage at gunpoint.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Sabeiha entered the residence despite the danger, confronted the armed suspect, and successfully incapacitated him.
“We are grateful for Officer Sabeiha’s actions that day to save a mother and her children from a violent and dangerous criminal. His professionalism in the face of danger is a testament to his unwavering commitment to keep the public safe,” U.S. Attorney Toepfer said in the release.
The Freedom 250 Hometown Hero Award is part of a recognition tied to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The Northern District of Ohio office said the award honors liberty, service, civic responsibility, and those who embody those ideals through public service.
For the Elyria Police Department and the community it serves, the recognition highlights one of the moments most people hope never happens: an officer making a split-second decision to move toward danger because innocent lives are inside.
