Thin Blue News remembers Assistant Special Agent in Charge Joseph Love of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations on October 19, 2026, the second anniversary of his End of Watch. This is an anniversary remembrance, not a report of a new death.
A career of public service
ICE’s official remembrance of its fallen 9/11 recovery heroes identifies Love as an assistant special agent in charge and records his death on October 19, 2024. The agency says he served the American public for 32 years and performed recovery work at the World Trade Center after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
In its 2026 Police Week tribute, “Joseph Love: A legacy of selflessness,” ICE identifies him as Joseph S. Love and connects his service to the Homeland Security Investigations directorate. The tribute says he died from cancer that developed after his involvement in search and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site. This remembrance keeps that official account broad and does not add private medical information or speculation.
Remembered by a colleague
ICE Peer Support Program National Program Manager Michell A. Chase recalled working with Love as a special agent in Newark, New Jersey. In the agency’s tribute, Chase described him as dedicated to the mission and highly respected by his HSI colleagues.
“His selfless response to the 9/11 efforts as part of legacy INS demonstrated his unwavering commitment to service.”
— Michell A. Chase, in ICE’s official tribute
The reference to the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service preserves the historical context of his 9/11 response without treating today’s agency structure as if it existed unchanged throughout his career.
Two years later
On this anniversary, the focus is Love’s service and the memory held by his family, friends and colleagues. Thin Blue News offers this remembrance with respect for those who knew him and for the public-service career documented by his agency.
