FLORENCE, Ore. — A Lane County Search and Rescue K-9 helped volunteers reach a missing person near Florence after alerting that someone was nearby, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
The search began on Sept. 12 after the Florence Police Department requested assistance. At about 2:30 p.m., Lane County Sheriff’s Office resources responded, and Search and Rescue volunteers began working the area where the person was last known to be, the agency said in an official public update.
Jasper’s alert narrowed the search
During the operation, K-9 Jasper alerted volunteers that someone was nearby. Searchers then conducted what the sheriff’s office described as a sound sweep and located the missing person.
KEZI reported that the individual needed medical care. Western Lane Fire and EMS Authority responded, and Florence police officers transported the person to a local hospital for treatment.

In its public guidance, the sheriff’s office encouraged people to tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return, check conditions before leaving, prepare for the possibility of staying out overnight and carry maps that work without cell service.
The agency also recommended wearing a life jacket around water, remaining in place if lost, and carrying a whistle and flashlight to help searchers locate you.
